Short answer: Used EV and hybrid shipping is carrier- and route-specific; do not buy on the assumption that a normal car booking will work. The IMDG Code amendment 42-24 became mandatory on 1 January 2026. Obtain written acceptance for the exact vehicle condition, shipping method and route before buyout.

Legal classification and commercial acceptance are separate

The updated framework introduced dedicated entries for battery-powered vehicles, including UN 3556 for lithium-ion battery-powered vehicles. Hybrids are not automatically classified like pure battery-electric cars; the propulsion system and relevant provisions must be assessed by a competent dangerous-goods professional.

Correct classification does not force a carrier to accept the cargo. Carrier policies can be stricter than the regulatory minimum.

For example, Pacific Forum Line’s published 2026 notice states a new-vehicle-only acceptance policy for battery-powered/hybrid vehicles in closed containers with hazardous booking. That is an example of one carrier policy, not a worldwide ban on used EV exports or proof that this carrier serves your route.

What to confirm before paying

Send the forwarder the VIN, powertrain, battery type where known, vehicle age, operating condition and proposed destination. Request:

Carrier acceptance for a used vehicle on the actual itinerary.

Classification and required declarations, including any applicable exemptions.

Battery-condition and recall documentation requirements.

State-of-charge, loading and handling instructions.

Restrictions on damaged, defective, flooded or non-running vehicles.

Charges, booking validity and the consequence of rejection.

Do not use a generic “30% battery limit” for every sea shipment. Confirm the applicable maritime rules and the booked carrier’s instructions rather than importing an air-transport rule.

A hybrid badge is not a shipping declaration

A mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric vehicle can require different treatment. Tell the forwarder about the actual propulsion system. A battery condition concern should be disclosed, not hidden to obtain a normal booking.

Protect the timeline and the deposit

Agree what happens if no acceptable carrier will book the car: alternative route, added cost, postponement or contractual cancellation. Inspection and shipment acceptance should be resolved while purchase commitments are still controllable.

A vessel name or preliminary freight estimate is not enough. Keep written acceptance and the agreed booking conditions with the transaction file.
