Korea to UAE Car Shipping: Ports, Transit Time, RoRo vs Container
A used car bought in Korea for a UAE client leaves through Incheon, Pyeongtaek, Masan or Busan and is discharged at Jebel Ali (Dubai) or Khalifa Port (Abu Dhabi), on a car carrier (RoRo) or inside a 20ft or 40ft container. As of mid-September 2026, transits of the Strait of Hormuz remain restricted and contested since the strikes of 28 February 2026: Lloyd's List Intelligence reported on 19 August 2026 that transit is "restricted" and Jebel Ali container throughput is running at roughly 10% of normal, The National wrote on 13 August that Jebel Ali is operational but vessel traffic is reduced, and Gulf News noted on 20 August that traffic is "subdued" while Iran still declares the strait closed. Scheduled car-carrier and container services to Jebel Ali are heavily reduced and a reopening deal is still under negotiation, so every transit-time and freight figure below is a pre-closure baseline or a dated quote, not a commitment. Confirm the current status of the strait and of your discharge port with the forwarder before booking.
Korean load ports: Incheon, Pyeongtaek, Masan, Busan
Incheon: the used-car port. The Incheon Port Authority reported 234,614 used cars shipped in the first half of 2023, 183,773 on container vessels and 50,841 on car carriers, and a 76.3% share of Korea's car exports. Container packing yards cluster here, so container quotes usually name Incheon as origin.
Pyeongtaek, Masan, Busan: Pyeongtaek is the new-car and RoRo port (a record 1.5 million units in 2014 per Automotive Logistics) and the usual origin of a Gulf RoRo booking; Masan is a dealer-channel RoRo port; Busan is the container hub named in direct container schedules to Jebel Ali. Höegh Autoliners lists all of them among its Korean ports of call.
UAE discharge ports: Jebel Ali and Khalifa Port
Jebel Ali (Dubai): DP World stated on 7 August 2025 that a new 2.6 million square foot yard added 13,000 CEUs (car equivalent units), bringing total capacity to 75,000 CEUs, with an 800-metre quay working up to three RoRo vessels at Terminal 4. The port handled 545,000 vehicles in the first half of 2025, 65% of them imports.
Khalifa Port (Abu Dhabi): AD Ports describes Autoterminal Khalifa Port as 320,000 sqm, 15,000 vehicles, a 600 m quay and 2 berths; in September 2024 AD Ports Group reported a 30% volume rise in the first half of 2024 and 90,000 square metres of new yard.
Who actually sails the Korea–Gulf lane
Hyundai Glovis: a Korean car-carrier operator; the Korea Herald reported on 29 April 2026 a planned fleet of 128 vessels by 2030 and growth from 3.4 million to 5 million units a year. It publishes no schedule for third-party used cars; space comes through a forwarder holding allocation.
EUKOR: 80% Wallenius Wilhelmsen, 20% Hyundai Motor and Kia, around 3.2 million CEU a year per its own site; its schedule search is public, so a forwarder can name a specific sailing.
Höegh Autoliners: lists Khalifa Port, Port Rashid, Jebel Ali and Sharjah among its UAE ports, and its 9,100-car Höegh Sunrise called at Jebel Ali on 24 September 2025 per DP World, but from Europe. Its trade-route list has "Europe to Middle East" and no East Asia to Middle East route, so treat it as a transhipment option, not a regular Korea–Gulf service.
The Hormuz factor in 2026: why transit days are not what they were
Pre-closure indicative figures were 16–18 days for a direct Busan–Jebel Ali container and 18–22 days via Incheon (Cubic, page dated 24 November 2024) and 21–28 days for RoRo (forwarder page dated 26 April 2026). These are forwarder figures, not schedules.
Semafor reported on 2 September 2026 that the strait has been "effectively closed to container shipping since Feb. 28" and that Jebel Ali handled 374,000 TEU in the second quarter of 2026, down 90% year on year against 15.5 million TEU in all of 2024. After the mid-June 2026 US–Iran agreement to gradually reopen the strait, Jebel Ali "remained operational but restricted" (Maritime News), and the UN Logistics Cluster noted on 25 May 2026 "Extended waiting times at Jebel Ali Port for breakbulk/bulk/ro-ro cargo". On 3 April 2026 Reuters quoted Hyundai Glovis as "currently unable to access some Middle East routes".
Cargo for the UAE is instead landed at Khor Fakkan and Fujairah on the east coast, outside the strait, and trucked to Dubai: AGBI reported Khor Fakkan at 50,000 containers a week, up from 2,000, and TransGlobal cited four-week berthing waits there for RoRo vessels in July 2026. Ask which UAE port is on the bill of lading and its berthing wait this week.
RoRo or container: one car, two cars, damage exposure
RoRo: port drivers drive the car on, lash it on deck and drive it off. No packing cost, but the car passes through several hands and open yards at both ends. Incheon's 2023 split (183,773 container against 50,841 RoRo) shows used-car exporters mostly choose containers, partly because RoRo space on Glovis and EUKOR sailings goes to factory cars first.
20ft container: one car. Per Hapag-Lloyd the internal length is 5,900 mm and the door opening 2,340 mm wide by 2,292 mm high. A Mercedes-Maybach S-Class fits; a tall SUV needs a height check against the 2,292 mm door.
40ft high cube: two cars. Internal length is 12,032 mm and door height 2,597 mm per Hapag-Lloyd. Two cars fit nose to tail only if combined length plus lashing clearance stays under 12,032 mm; a G90 and a Range Rover for one buyer need that arithmetic first. Sealing limits handling damage and theft but shifts the risk to chocking and strapping, so pre-sealing lashing photos belong in the file; paired-shipment candidates are in the catalogue.
Marine insurance basics
Cover level: the Institute Cargo Clauses (A), text dated 1/1/09, cover "all risks of loss of or damage to the subject-matter insured except as excluded"; Clauses (C) cover only named perils such as fire, stranding, sinking, collision and jettison. For one high-value car, (A) is the relevant form; (C) will not pay for a dent or a yard theft (text at If Insurance).
War exclusion: Clause 6 of the (A) form states that "in no case shall this insurance cover loss damage or expense caused by war civil war revolution rebellion insurrection". War risk for the Gulf is a separate cover, quoted per voyage, and Flexport noted on 15 June 2026 that "War risk insurance is being withdrawn or sharply repriced".
Where freight cost figures come from, with a worked example
The only dated public figure: a forwarder page dated 26 April 2026 quoted USD 950–1,250 per vehicle RoRo to Jebel Ali, excluding Korean port handling of USD 80–150 and a document fee of USD 50–80 (SH Global). No carrier publishes a used-car tariff, and Flexport recorded a $3,000 per 40ft container emergency conflict surcharge for Gulf ports in June 2026; a number without a date and a named port is not a quote.
Worked example: a car priced at ₩80,000,000 is $58,542 at 1 USD = 1,366.53 KRW (x-rates, page timestamp 1 January 2026 06:21 UTC). Add the top of the April 2026 RoRo range, $1,250, for $59,792 before insurance. Dubai Customs charges 5% on a customs value of car price + freight + insurance up to the place of importation (GCC Common Customs Law): on $59,792 that is $2,989.60, and each further $100 of insurance premium adds $5.00 of duty.
What KingStone checks before you pay
Insurance-history report: before buy-out, the Korean insurance history report is read line by line: payouts, amounts, and whether repairs touched bolt-on panels or the frame. A repainted door is cosmetic; a straightened frame rail changes the car's category and value at Jebel Ali.
Lien and encumbrance check: the registration record is checked for loans, seizures and tax holds. A car under lien cannot be deregistered for export; some dealers list one anyway, expecting to clear it with the buyer's money.
Official-import status and mileage plausibility: for a Mercedes, BMW or Range Rover the check confirms import by the official Korean importer, not a grey channel. Mileage is compared with inspection records and service stamps; a 2021 car at 30,000 km with three years of dealer servicing is plausible, the same reading with no history is not.
Open questions
No carrier publishes a used-car tariff or transit time, so the transit ranges (16–22 days container, 21–28 days RoRo) and the April 2026 freight range come from forwarder pages, not from Hyundai Glovis, EUKOR or Höegh, and none reflects the post-February 2026 lane. Whether Glovis or EUKOR call Jebel Ali or Khalifa directly in September 2026, or discharge at Khor Fakkan or Fujairah, is unconfirmed by any carrier page. The exchange rate carries the rate page's timestamp, 1 January 2026 06:21 UTC, and must be refreshed at booking. No public cargo war-risk premium for Gulf ports was found, and Khalifa Port RoRo figures for 2025–2026 are unverified.
